The weather in Lapland hugely varies depending on the season and day: from -35 on cold winter days to sometimes +30 on hot summer days. Always check the weather forecast for your stay.
In winter, consider the outside temperature and possible wind as it makes big difference. Think of how much time you are planning to spend outside and what activities you are planning to do. For going from your room to the restaurant in -10, you are generally ok by putting a long warm jacket over, or wearing a set of pants and a winter jacket. If you plan on spending a long day outdoors, you need to prepare more carefully and dress up in layers.
Some tips for dressing up in layers:
- When layering, prefer more thin, warm layers rather than a few thick layers. It will insulate better and allow you to strip off some layers if the temperature climbs. Staying dry is the top priority. For the same reason, try to avoid cotton as a base layer, and opt for wool, silk or synthetic fabrics.
- It is better to wear clothing that is not too tight. Loose clothing helps to trap a layer of warm air between the fabric and your body, which acts as insulation to keep you warm.
- Add a first layer consisting of a comfortably light fabric that will remove the sweat away from your body. Avoid pure cotton or other similar materials, because these fabrics retain moisture and will chill you down. The best material is synthetic fiber or merino wool.
- Next layer should be a knit sweater, sweatshirt or fleece. This layer is to keep you warm. Also, a warm tracking suit will do or the latest trend of one piece fleece overalls.
- Wear thick socks, preferably layering one thin pair with one or two thicker ones. Use socks made of 100% wool or wool blends for a better insulation, and avoid cotton socks in cold temperatures
- Add more layers as the temperature goes lower. But also remove layers if you are going to do active sports, intence hikes etc.
- Thin under gloves
- The outer layer to protect you from wind, snow and for better insulation. Ski pants and ski/warm winter jacket or a thermal overall will do well. A pair of good mittens would usually be warmer than gloves.
- Winter boots. Make sure they are tall enough so the snow doesn't get in, are waterproof and well-insulated.
When doing activities with us, we provide a thermal overall, winter boots, woolen socks, scarf, mittens and a balaclava for snowmobiling.
Also, remember to pack a good moisturizer with you as the cold air can dry your skin and lips.
The same way as adults: remember the layers and warm, long, under wear. As long as the children keep on moving, they will be warm in same weather as the adults. Smallest children such as babies and toddlers should be protected with more layers, as they do not move as much. Before booking your safari, please consider if 2-5 hours outside in winter conditions is suitable for your child.
